Active RTLS systems that use WiFi infrastructure as the detecting component require expensive battery operated, high maintenance tags and devices, and do not provide clear and accurate location data, without costly network expansion and proprietary “exciters.” On the surface, the technology sounds great because you already have a WiFi infrastructure in place, but in reality, the added traffic on already over-burdened networks, “ghost” locationing and the fact that you have to adjust down the beacon rate in order to conserve battery power renders the systems ineffective.
